Neutral Milk Hotel
Almost a decade after falling in love with Neutral Milk Hotel I finally heard them play live. In the Aeroplane Over the Sea has to be in my top 10 all time favorites. It's also one that very rarely leaves regular rotation. I remember listening to Radiohead's OK Computer and being blown away. I still hold it up there in the top 10 or so but there are times when a year or more passes and I haven't listened to it. Not so with Neutral Milk Hotel, I listen to it regularly and every time am amazed that I am still amazed by it.
So last night seeing it performed live was not surprisingly, amazing. I expected hearing it live to fall short of the brilliance of the CD, but it really didn't. What might have been lost in the usual differences was more than made up for by the performance. They looked like they were having a great time.
I spent some time deep in the thick of the crowd on the floor and also back in the balcony where the vibe was very laid back and everything was in perfect view. Both were awesome in their own way. I had been wanting to see them for a huge portion of my life and it was crazy to finally do it. As I sat up watching them perform Oh Comely one of my very favorite pieces I thought about my mom and how excited I was to tell her I got the tickets earlier this year. I realized that this is the last thing I will ever do that my mom knew about. She knew I will be getting married but she doesn't know any of the details. This was it. I hope she was there in spirit because it was a beautiful experience.
